Nippon Ichi Software America Releases Trailers for Newly Announced Anime Series + My thoughts on another anime….

-

As most of you should be aware, in North America, the game company Nippon Ichi Software America (NISA) has also started distributing anime series since last year with subtitles only. A number of these series have proven to be in my opinion, successful such as Toradora, Wagnaria! and a few others, some of which I shall hopefully be able to review this month. At Anime Expo 2011, they announced two new acquisitions which they have now released blurbs and trailers for:

kimi ni todoke -From Me to You-
Sawako Kuronuma has had a difficult time fitting in. Is it her long black hair, her hushed manner of speaking, or is it her name’s similarity to Sadako, a character from a popular Japanese horror series? On her first day of high school, Sawako meets the one boy who treats her like a normal girl—Shota Kazehaya. Through his selfless aid, Sawako slowly learns to come out of her shell and even begins to make friends for the first time in her life. However, with a new social life come social pressures. Rumors begin to circulate about her, her friends, and even the kindhearted Kazehaya. As she grows into her new identity, Sawako must learn to deal with such pressures as well as start to understand the unfamiliar feelings inside of her, especially in regards to the boy who made her new start possible.

Thoughts
A series that could go either way for me. It is a genre that I have seen before, but I will have to leave it up to the all important watch to determine if it is good or not.

Dororon Enma-Kun Meeramera
It’s Tokyo in the 1970s, and evil youkai (goblins) are attacking the human world. The “Youkai Patrol” – Enma, Princess Yukiko, Kapaeru, and Grandpa Shappo – are sent from hell to exterminate them.

Thoughts
I was initially under the assumption that this would be the older anime series (Released in the 1970’s), which sounded a bit odd but this is actually the recently aired version in Japan. Looks interesting and should go down well.

Afterthought

For those wondering about Persona 4: The Animation which is due out next anime season in Japan, Siliconera.com recently held an interview with the president of NISA and this is what they had to say regarding it, which sounds sort of promising:

Speaking of anime, are you going to license Persona 4: The Animation?

Do you want to see it?

Yeah, and I think my readers do!

It’s possible. We released the Disgaea anime series and Persona: Trinity Soul. Those two titles have hardcore fans from the video games, they spent hours and hours of their time on these video games. When we released Persona: Trinity Soul and Disgaea anime we heard from fans that the world and the way the characters feel from the anime aren’t really matching up to the video games. If there is any little difference from the anime fans, Persona fans and Disgaea fans, notice it and they get disappointed because what they want is what they played transferred into anime.

We take how they respond and react to the anime seriously. When we release anime we want the fans to be happy. With Persona 4: The Animation and because we’re a video game company too, we would love to do it. But, we want to evaluate the anime first to see if it’s lives up to the video game and follows the storyline from the game perfectly, and for quality, as well. We will consider it after an evaluation.

I feel obliged to add my opinions to this

First of all, in terms of fans of the Persona: Trinity Soul anime, fans were most probably disappointed because there was very little correlation between Persona 3 and Trinity Soul that sort of overhyped it (Including one most on the NISA Official Forums demanding that Evokers make a return or it wasn’t a sequel).

The Disgaea anime was most probably doomed to people who wanted a direct game –> anime port as since the game was episodic, there was a possibility that they would try and implement their own storylines in. Once again, if you ignored that fact, it was a solid althrough rather average anime series.

I can’t see the Persona 4 anime swaying much from the original content as unlike Persona:TS which was a sequel to the game and Disgaea which is episodic, the core concepts of the storyline have to remain: Murders, Rescuing and the group of students doing the saving, as the storyline can’t sway from those elements, except perhaps with the social links which might or might not make a mention in the series.

I would like to see a company release this title, and personally I would like to see it with the pleasant English dub cast that ATLUS managed to put together, however considering this is NISA, it will most probably remain a subtitled release. Either way, considering how big a hit Persona 4 is….. especially holding the title of the last good RPG on the PS2, I see this coming out over here one way or another.
