Square Enix used PlayStation’s State of Play broadcast to lock in a release date for Final Fantasy VII Revelation, accompanied by a new trailer and an extended look at gameplay. The title, to serve as the finale to the remake project, arrives on 8 April 2027 across PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S and PC. This will be the first time in the trilogy that there is a uniform release date across platforms.
The story picks up with Cloud Strife and his companions in a world on the brink of annihilation. Grieving a lost ally and facing a Sephiroth approaching godhood, the party boards the airship Highwind in an attempt to stop Meteor and prevent the destruction of the planet. The Highwind also serves a practical purpose, with the footage showing it used to travel across an open planet. Traversal is further supported by Piko the Chocobo, who develops alongside the party and gains new abilities for both movement and combat.
Combat itself builds on the hybrid system used across the project, with Cid and Vincent joining as new playable characters. The newly introduced FITS system grants additional abilities and increased power through specialised roles including Warrior, Knight, Black Mage and Summoner. The gameplay deep dive released during the stream shows Cid using the Knight FITS and Vincent using the Summoner FITS.
Several additional features were also detailed. Players can swap their active character and adjust party composition at any point while exploring. A grappling gun has been added for scaling rooftops and moving through environments at speed. Party selection extends to quests as well, with the choice of which members take part affecting how certain events and scenarios play out.
Physical and digital pre-orders are open now, though digital pre-orders for Nintendo Switch 2 will follow at a later date.
