Square Enix used the latest Nintendo Direct showcase to reveal a range of upcoming games, among them Final Fantasy Resonance, pitched as the first HD-2D entry in the Final Fantasy series.
The game is positioned as a blend of classic and modern Final Fantasy elements. It centres on a story involving Crystals and uses a strategic turn-based battle system that aims to offer a few modern twists. Series staples including chocobos, espers and airships return, and the cast features established characters from the series such as Cloud, Tidus and the Warrior of Light. The visuals use a retro-inspired HD-2D style built on pixel art.
Rather than being an entirely original story, Final Fantasy Resonance draws on the first story arc of the mobile game FINAL FANTASY Brave Exvius. This is not set to be a direct port however, and that the material has been reworked and rebuilt into a console-quality RPG.
Final Fantasy Resonance launches on 22 October 2026 for Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC.
