Silver Lining Interactive and Painted Black Games have confirmed that The Road of Dust and Sorrow will launch for PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2 and Xbox Series X|S in 2026, alongside its previously announced Steam (PC) release. The announcement followed a new trailer shown during the Future Games Show, offering a broader look at the game’s post apocalyptic world and its story focused on Katherine and her daughter Ava.
A playable demo for The Road of Dust and Sorrow is available now on Steam and Itch.io. According to the publisher, the demo has already received a strong response from players, with praise directed at its atmosphere and story.
The Road of Dust and Sorrow is pitched as a story driven pixel art horror game inspired by survival horror titles from the 1990s. The game follows Katherine and Ava as they travel through the remains of civilisation in search of safety. Its world has been devastated by a failed cure originally designed to end famine. Instead, the experiment transformed people into feral creatures known as Dusters, driven by hunger. As Katherine and Ava continue their journey, they attract the attention of a Preacher and his mysterious cult. At the centre of the story is Katherine’s need to protect Ava. As the pair move deeper into a hostile world, players will need to decide when to fight, when to run and how far they are willing to go to keep Ava safe.
Players will explore abandoned streets, decaying buildings and overgrown environments while searching for supplies and a way forward. Gameplay will include environmental puzzles, hidden paths, locked rooms and encounters with Dusters.
