During Summer Game Fest Live 2026, Square Enix officially unveiled Final Fantasy VII Revelation, the third and final chapter in the broader Final Fantasy VII remake project which started in 2020. The game is scheduled to launch in Spring 2027 / Autumn 2027 (ANZ), for the first time in any chapter of the trilogy, simultaneously across the PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S and PC.
The announcement was accompanied by the debut of the official reveal trailer, presented by Director Naoki Hamaguchi and Matt Mercer, the English voice actor for Vincent Valentine. Square Enix also shared an extended gameplay presentation, offering a closer look at exploration, combat, new locations and playable characters.
Final Fantasy VII Revelation follows Cloud Strife and his companions as the planet moves closer to catastrophe following the events of Rebirth. With Sephiroth nearing godhood and Meteor threatening total destruction, the party takes to the skies aboard the Highwind in a final attempt to prevent the obliteration of the world. One of the major additions shown in the reveal trailer is full exploration using the Highwind airship. Players will be able to travel across the planet, parachute into locations from above and transition from air to land.
The remake project’s hybrid battle system also returns, allowing players to switch between real-time action and Tactical Mode. Final Fantasy VII Revelation will expand this system with new playable characters and abilities, including Vincent Valentine and Cid Highwind. The extended gameplay reveal showcased several reimagined locations, including the Mideel archipelago, Wutai and the Northern Continent. Vincent brings fast gunplay and bestial transformations to combat, while Cid focuses on lance-based attacks, with options for both single-target strikes and wider area damage.
Square Enix also introduced the FITS system, which lets players equip unique outfits that grant new movesets inspired by classic FINAL FANTASY jobs such as Black Mage and Warrior.
Producer Yoshinori Kitase reflected on the long history of FINAL FANTASY VII and the remake project as it approaches its conclusion.
FINAL FANTASY VII, first released in 1997, has been beloved by fans for many years and has since become a “legend” in its own right. The FINAL FANTASY VII remake project that began in 2020 with everyone’s passionate support is finally reaching its climactic finale with FINAL FANTASY VII REVELATION. The story’s final destination represents my emotions spanning thirty years working on this title; and yet, as the developer, our hands alone cannot turn its final page. It’s only when you, the player, step inside and memorialize this journey that a new “legend” is finally born. We hope you witness the coming together of our hearts, and yours.
Director Naoki Hamaguchi spoke about the theme of resolve and thanked fans for supporting the remake project over the years.
I’m beyond excited to announce FINAL FANTASY VII REVELATION, launching simultaneously across all platforms in Spring 2027. I’m truly grateful to our fans who believed in this story and supported us for so many years. In this title, centered around “resolve,” Cloud and his companions will confront their respective convictions and continue their journey towards the final battle that will determine the planet’s fate. All the stories and emotions accumulated over the years will culminate in the most satisfying way with this experience, brought to you as the series’ final chapter. Please look forward to it.
Creative Director Tetsuya Nomura shared that the team’s goal has been to bring the many FINAL FANTASY VII stories together for the remake project’s final chapter.
As creators, we have carefully built and nurtured the FINAL FANTASY VII series over many years, expanding it through numerous spin-off titles along the way. Over time, we believe each fan has developed their own unique interpretation of the story, and our goal has been to bring all of these FINAL FANTASY VII stories together so that they ultimately converge in the final chapter of the remake project. While there may be a mix of excitement and uncertainty, we are confident that this journey will remain an unforgettable experience for years to come. Thank you sincerely for joining us and being part of this journey over so many years.
