ZeniMax Online Studios has revealed a significant change to the content delivery structure of its MMORPG, The Elder Scrolls Online. During the 2026 Seasons Direct, the developer announced the transition to a seasonal model where each period will last approximately 90 days. These seasons are designed to offer themed content and rewards, with the gameplay additions provided free of charge to all existing game owners.
The new cycle begins with Season Zero: Dawn and Dusk, which is now available. This season introduces a limited-time Event Zone known as The Night Market. Located within the Oblivion realm of Fargrave, this area will be accessible for a seven-week window. During this time, players can pledge themselves to one of three factions to engage in various PvE encounters. Participation in this event allows players to earn the Night’s Den, a new player home.
Alongside the new zone, Season Zero brings the Challenge Difficulty system on 8 June 2026. This optional overland feature includes four distinct difficulty tiers, with higher levels offering increased rewards. The update also addresses various gameplay systems, including the introduction of a Veterancy PvP progression system and a refresh for the Dragonknight class, which is available to players immediately.
The developer has also implemented more than 20 player experience improvements that are currently live. These updates are intended to reduce general friction within the game by offering faster mount training, bag upgrades, increased furnishing limits, and the ability to respec skills through the user interface.
Looking further into 2026, Season One is expected to arrive sometime in June – August 2026. This update features the return of the Thieves Guild with a storyline set in a visually updated version of the Glenumbra zone. This narrative continues a plot that first appeared ten years ago and will include a puzzle-focused area called The Sage’s Vault. The Daedric Prince Sheogorath is also slated to return for a separate questline that takes players across various parts of Tamriel.
Other content planned for later in the year includes the High Seas of Tamriel event, which will serve as a platform for experimental naval combat and underwater exploration mechanics. The studio also plans to release Solo Dungeons, which are reimagined versions of existing group content tailored for individual play. Additionally, the Crimson Veldt will be introduced as the first new Trial added to the base game since its original launch in 2014.
During the presentation, the studio offered a brief preview of its 2027 plans, which involve a return to a previously unseen region of Skyrim. This future update will introduce the first Excursion Zone to the game and feature dynamic blizzard weather conditions that will actively influence gameplay within the zone.
The Elder Scrolls Online is scheduled to join the PC Game Pass and Xbox Play Anywhere catalogues on 2 June 2026. Furthermore, PlayStation Plus members can claim the Gold Road Collection for free until 6 April 2026. This collection includes the base game, the 2024 Gold Road Chapter, and all previous major expansions, as well as access to the Warden, Necromancer, and Arcanist classes.
