Indie game developer Paper Castle Games and narrative label Fellow Traveller have announced that their upcoming title Wander Stars will launch on PC and Nintendo Switch on 1 August 2025.
Presented in an episodic format inspired by classic anime series such as Cowboy Bebop, Dragon Ball Z, and One Piece, Wander Stars follows the journey of martial artist Ringo and the enigmatic Wolfe. Together, they embark on a cosmic search for the fragments of the Wanderstar map, uncovering secrets and surprises along the way. The story is delivered over ten chapters, each structured to evoke the feel of an anime television episode.
Combat in Wander Stars is based around a distinctive mechanic known as “Kiai”, a word-based system that allows players to create their own attacks by combining unlockable words. With more than 200 words to discover, players can unleash combinations like “Strong! Heat! Smash!” or “Phantom! Guard!” to gain the upper hand in battle. This approach offers a flexible and strategic layer to encounters, requiring consideration of cooldowns, enemy vulnerabilities, and word synergy.
Outside of combat, players are encouraged to use words honourably. Doing so can result in the formation of friendships and the discovery of unique phrases that offer future advantages, reinforcing the game’s blend of action and narrative depth.
Ahead of the full release, a closed beta will be available for players via Steam starting 19 June 2025. Interested participants can register through Fellow Traveller’s official sign-up page.
