Publisher 505 Games has announced Bloodstained: The Scarlet Engagement, a new entry in the 2.5D side-scrolling action RPG series. The game is currently in development for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, with a release window set for 2026.
Serving as the next instalment in the Bloodstained franchise, the game is set in the same gothic world first introduced in Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night. Creative Director Shutaro and producer Koji Igarashi (Iga), both veterans of the genre, are leading development.
Set in the 16th century, the story revolves around the Ethereal Castle, a demonic stronghold that has resisted all attempts at destruction. Players will take control of Leonard, a young apprentice of the Black Wolves, and Alexander, the last surviving knight of the White Stags. Together, they must infiltrate the castle, confront the Demon Lord Elias, and overcome his protectors – six vampire-like beings known as the Sanguinaries, each with distinct and dangerous powers.
The Ethereal Castle itself is described as the largest and most intricate environment in the series to date. Players can expect a sprawling network of gothic halls, hidden caverns, and perilous traps. Exploration remains a central focus, with rewards ranging from powerful relics and enchantments to unique pieces of gear that affect both the characters’ stats and appearance.
In a shift for the series, The Scarlet Engagement introduces a dual-character system where players control one protagonist while the other supports in battle, with the ability to switch between them freely. This new mechanic is designed to be integral to both combat and puzzle-solving throughout the game.
Players can also expect a cast of fully-voiced characters in both English and Japanese, further expanding the narrative and lore of the Bloodstained universe.
