During the recent PlayStation State of Play broadcast, Capcom has announced Onimusha: Way of the Sword, a new entry in the long-running action series, set to release on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC in 2026. In addition, a remaster of Onimusha 2: Samurai’s Destiny will launch on 23 May 2025, bringing updated visuals and new gameplay features to the classic.
Onimusha: Way of the Sword – A New Hero Emerges
Set in a haunting reimagining of Kyoto, Onimusha: Way of the Sword follows Miyamoto Musashi (voiced by Kenichiro Thomson), a skilled samurai seeking to prove himself. However, his journey takes an unexpected turn as he faces an invasion of the Genma, supernatural creatures drawn to the Malice engulfing the city.
True to the series’ combat roots, players will wield the Oni Gauntlet, absorbing souls to restore health and unleash powerful attacks. The game will feature fast-paced swordplay, allowing players to cut through hordes of enemies in intense battles.
Capcom has also revealed that Musashi’s face model is based on the late Toshiro Mifune, an iconic actor known for his roles in classic samurai films.
Onimusha 2: Samurai’s Destiny Remaster
In addition to the new title, Capcom confirmed that Onimusha 2: Samurai’s Destiny will be remastered for modern platforms. This enhanced edition retains the original 2002 PlayStation 2 story, following Jubei Yagyu’s quest for revenge, while adding various quality-of-life improvements, including:
- Remastered HD visuals, including updated character models, CG cutscenes, and UI elements.
- New gameplay options, such as instant weapon swapping, auto-save functionality, and an optional “Easy Mode.”
- A challenging “Hell Mode”, where a single hit results in death.
- Aspect ratio toggle, allowing players to switch between 16:9 and 4:3 during gameplay.
- A fully accessible Gallery, now supporting zoom functionality and featuring 100 new pieces of artwork.
- Original soundtrack integration, letting players listen to all 43 tracks from the game.
Players who pre-order Onimusha 2: Samurai’s Destiny or purchase the Onimusha 1 + 2 Pack early will receive the Onimusha 2: Orchestra Album Selection Pack, which includes select tracks from the orchestra album and a special item pack. Additionally, those with save data from Onimusha: Warlords will unlock a Samanosuke Outfit for Jubei, based on the protagonist from the first game.
