At The Game Awards 2024, Capcom unveiled Onimusha: Way of the Sword, a new entry in the Onimusha franchise and the first addition to the series in nearly two decades. Scheduled for a global release in 2026, the action game will be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam.
Returning players to the series’ hallmark setting of dark fantasy feudal Japan, Onimusha: Way of the Sword will feature samurai warriors confronting supernatural threats through combat infused with cutting-edge mechanics. Set in Kyoto during the early Edo period—a time of relative peace in Japan—the game sees the city transformed into an eerie, Genma-infested landscape. The Genma, demonic creatures central to the franchise, threaten the world, and players take on the role of a lone samurai equipped with the Oni Gauntlet to combat this otherworldly menace.
First released in 2001, the Onimusha series blends historical settings from Japan’s Sengoku period with elements of folklore and dark fantasy. This new installment seeks to expand the series’ legacy, appealing to long-time fans and newcomers alike.
