Square Enix Releases Crisis Core And Torneko Remaster, Reveals New SaGa Details

Square Enix has made a suite of announcements around some of their major gaming franchises, with two games available to play immediately, a free demo for a title due later this year, and a first look at an HD remake scheduled for early 2027.

Crisis Core arrives on Switch 2 with a launch discount

The Nintendo Switch 2 version of Crisis Core -Final Fantasy VII- Reunion is positioned as a lead-in to Final Fantasy VII Revelation, the third and final entry in the Final Fantasy VII Remake series, giving players a chance to experience the events that set the story in motion.

Reunion is a reworking of the original Crisis Core, with HD overhauls of character models, user interface and backgrounds, fully voiced dialogue in both English and Japanese, and a streamlined action-combat system that includes the option to trigger Limit Breaks and Summons.

To mark the launch, the game is currently 30% off for a limited time, with the offer ending on 23 September 2026

Torneko’s Mystery Dungeon leaves Japan for the first time

Dragon Quest Heroes: Torneko’s Mystery Dungeon -Classic HD- is a remaster of the 1993 Dragon Quest spin-off, a title which has never previously been released outside Japan. Square Enix credits the original with kicking off the roguelike genre in that country.

The game follows Torneko, the weapons merchant from Dragon Quest IV, as he pursues his goal of running the greatest item shop in the world. Players venture into constantly changing dungeons to find treasure and escape with it, using the proceeds to grow the shop. Every action Torneko takes, whether moving, attacking or using an item, gives monsters an opportunity to strike back, and defeating those monsters earns experience points to level up.

This remaster presents the game in a storybook-inspired world created by Naoki Ikushima, whose package illustrations appeared on Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake and Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake. It also adds a new opening video, updated HD visuals, quality-of-life improvements and, exclusively on the Steam version, interactive streaming features.

Romancing SaGa 3 remake set for 16 February 2027

Romancing SaGa 3: Destinies United is a full HD remake of the turn-based classic, developed by the team behind Trials of Mana and Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven. It retains the series’ Freeform Scenario system, in which player decisions shape the course of the adventure.

The story is set in a world subject to a cosmic event called the Rise of Morastrum, which occurs every 300 years and claims the life of every person born in that year, save for one survivor known as the Child of Destiny. A little over a dozen years after the most recent disaster, the Four Sinistrals have returned with the aim of reopening the Abyss Gates and bringing ruin to the world. Players pick from eight heroes bound by fate and decide which lands to visit, which stories to follow and the order in which to confront the Sinistrals, meaning each playthrough can differ.

On the presentation side, the remake features new HD visuals, the original compositions by Kenji Ito alongside newly arranged versions produced under his supervision, and fully voiced event scenes in Japanese and English.

Romancing SaGa 3: Destinies United will launch on 16 February 2027 for Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC via Steam and Xbox on PC.

Try the first chapter of Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World for free

Rounding out the announcements, a free demo for Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World is now downloadable on Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC via Steam and Xbox on PC. It covers the game’s first chapter and introduces the cast, the battle systems, monster synthesis and exploration. Up to eight monsters recruited in the demo can be carried over to the full game* when it launches on 3 December 2026.

The latest entry in the Dragon Quest Monsters series features more than 500 monsters, a mix of new additions and returning favourites, along with updated graphics. Its story follows dual protagonists Bianca and Nera as they set out to restore the world of Witherwood. Square Enix notes that no prior experience with earlier Dragon Quest Monsters games is required.
