FREE STYLE, Inc. has announced that OBAKEIDORO 2: Chase & Seek will launch globally for Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 on 6 August. Preorders for the supernatural multiplayer game are now available through the Nintendo eShop. The sequel to 2019’s OBAKEIDORO! once again presents a game of supernatural tag, with players divided between a team of Humans attempting to escape and Monsters hunting them down. Its stages and characters draw inspiration from traditional Japanese legends, combining eerie environments with a “scary-cute” visual style intended to remain accessible across different age groups and horror tolerance levels.
Online matches support up to eight players and take place over three-minute rounds. Depending on the selected format, one or two players control the Monsters while teams of three or six players take the Human roles. The Monster team wins by capturing every Human and placing them in jail before the time limit expires. The Humans only need one team member to remain uncaptured when time runs out to secure victory.
Each Monster has its own traits and abilities, including high-speed movement, powerful capture attacks and the ability to pass through walls. Human players must instead rely on teamwork and movement options, such as jumping between floors, carrying teammates to safety and using a Lantern to temporarily stun pursuing Monsters.
Captured Humans are not necessarily eliminated for the remainder of a round. Their teammates can attempt to break them out of jail, although Monsters can remain nearby and use the rescue attempt as an opportunity to capture additional players.
OBAKEIDORO 2 will support both online and local multiplayer for up to eight participants. Custom Rules will also allow groups to adjust settings such as the number of Monsters and Humans, match time limits and other conditions. Nintendo Switch 2 players will additionally be able to use GameShare across two systems, allowing someone without their own copy of the game to participate.
Six modes will be available at launch. Quick Match provides online battles against players from around the world, with available maps rotating each hour. Eight-player matches will also be scheduled at specific times. Room Match allows players to create private online rooms, restrict access with a password or invite others by sharing a Room ID. Join Friends offers a more direct way to enter sessions involving friends who are already online, with support for both Quick Match and Room Match.
Single Player Chase & Seek offers a solo alternative for players who want to progress at their own pace. FREE STYLE describes it as the most effective mode for earning Coins, an in-game currency used to unlock additional Monsters and Lanterns. Meanwhile, local Party Chase & Seek supports up to eight players across multiple Nintendo Switch systems using local wireless communication. Splitscreen Chase & Seek instead allows up to four people to play on a single system, dividing the display into four sections for local cooperative or competitive matches.
