Bringing a twist to the traditional Disgaea series formula, Nippon Ichi Software America (NIS America) has released their action RPG spinoff game Disgaea Mayhem to Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5 and PC via Steam. This chapter trades the traditional strategic battles the series is known for, and instead puts players directly in the action.
Players take control of N.A., a mercenary motivated by money and a fondness for sweets. N.A. is recruited to help Princess Tichelle satisfy her craving for flan, setting the pair on a lighthearted adventure filled with monsters, demons and increasingly large damage numbers.
Combat allows players to move directly into the action and fight hundreds of enemies using seven different weapon types. Available options include familiar Disgaea equipment such as swords, guns, fists, axes and bows, with players able to change weapons when they want to adopt a different combat style.
Although Disgaea Mayhem introduces action focused gameplay, it retains several of the progression systems associated with the wider series. Players can enter the Item World to improve equipment, reincarnate characters to increase their base statistics and repeatedly gain levels to strengthen their party.
New bills can also be passed through the Dark Chocolate Assembly, providing further ways to improve characters until individual attacks begin dealing millions of points of damage. Classic demons from the franchise can be recruited along the way, including the recurring Prinny.
