A new entry in the Onimusha series, Onimusha: Way of the Sword, has been confirmed for Nintendo Switch 2 during the latest Nintendo Direct. The title will release on 25 September 2026, arriving on the platform at the same time as the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and PC versions.
The game marks the first all-new instalment in the Japanese swordplay action franchise in two decades. Its story centres on Miyamoto Musashi, a young samurai whose place in Japanese history is well established, as he confronts the monstrous Genma overrunning Kyoto during the Edo period. Equipped with the mystical Oni Gauntlet, players take on power beyond ordinary human capability to fight off creatures from the underworld, with combat that the release describes as balancing depth and intensity.
The Nintendo Switch 2 release also carries a platform-specific feature in the form of motion controls. By using the Joy-Con 2 controllers, players can take a more hands-on approach to the sword combat and handle other actions in the game, such as aiming the bow. Whether it becomes a gimmick very quickly or a fresh way of playing is yet to be seen…
