Muramasa: Revenant Blades Announced For Early 2027 Release

Marvelous Europe has announced Muramasa: Revenant Blades, an updated revival of Vanillaware’s 2D action RPG Muramasa: Rebirth. This is one among the many games announced during Nintendo’s most recent Nintendo Direct livestream. Currently in development, the game is scheduled to release in early 2027 for Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, and Windows PC via Steam. The release will also mark Vanillaware’s first game on PC.

Originally released for Wii in 2009 before arriving on PlayStation Vita in 2013, Muramasa is being updated for modern platforms with support for up to 4K resolution, revised combat and weapon systems, additional modes, and new gameplay options.

The new version will include full English voiceover for the first time, alongside new localisations in multiple languages. Players will also be able to experience all six storylines from the start, with original protagonists Momohime and Kisuke joined by Okoi, Gonbe, Arashimaru, and Rajaki, who were introduced in the PlayStation Vita version.

Set in Japan’s past, Muramasa: Revenant Blades centres on a conflict surrounding powerful samurai swords forged by the legendary Senji Muramasa. These weapons grant their wielders great strength, but also bring a blood driven madness. As different factions pursue the blades, demons and evil spirits begin to spread across the land, pulling six characters into separate stories shaped by the same dangerous weapons.

The game retains its side scrolling hack and slash action, with updated controls, more than 100 swords to forge, and dozens of skills to upgrade and customise. The move to modern hardware is also intended to highlight the game’s hand drawn characters, maps, and animations at higher resolutions.

Physical pre-orders are planned to open soon through participating retailers. A standard edition will be available for PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2 with a suggested retail price of €49.99, £44.99, or local equivalent. A Deluxe Edition will also be offered for €69.99, £59.99 or local equivalent, including the game and a collectible art book featuring Vanillaware artwork. Details regarding digital editions for console and PC will be announced at a later date.
