While Bubsy is a series perhaps most known for its PlayStation 1 release of Bubsy 3D which was an early attempt at a 3D platformer which didn’t hit the mark, the series has occasionally popped up now and then – the latest being 2017’s Bubsy: The Woolies Strike Back. Now publisher Atari and independent game studio Fabraz are back with another fourth-wall breaking gameplay experience, officially confirming a 22 May 2026 release date of Bubsy 4D for Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and PC.
The aim is for Bubsy 4D to blend nostalgic charm with modern movement mechanics, offering a colourful and expressive experience. The announcement included a statement attributed to the franchise’s protagonist, Bubsy T. Bobcat, who acknowledged the series’ historical reception while expressing optimism about the new collaboration between Atari and Fabraz:
Get ready for the comeback you never saw coming. It’s no secret that I’ve got a questionable track record, but Atari and Fabraz are determined to give me the game I’ve always deserved. This time, my claws are out and I’m ready to show off.
In Bubsy 4D, the narrative centers on a mission to retrieve the Golden Fleece from antagonists known as the BaaBots. Players will navigate through alien planets designed with fabric and craft themes, utilising a moveset that includes running, jumping, gliding, and rolling. Each planet concludes with a boss battle against the BaaBots.
The game includes several progression and customisation systems. Players can collect hidden blueprints to unlock new moves and equip the character with various outfits. Additionally, the title supports online time trials, allowing users to race against the ghost data of other players. Other characters including Terri, Terry, Virgil, and Oblivia will make appearances, accompanied by a soundtrack composed by Fat Bard.
A physical edition will be offered for the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 in some regions including Australia, and includes a game cartridge, a tuck-in exterior box, a user manual, a poster, and an art book.
