Offering a new challenge in the first-person shooter genre against Call of Duty, Electronic Arts and Battlefield Studios have released Battlefield 6 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC via Steam, the EA App and the Epic Games Store. This is the latest major numbered instalment in the franchise, the last one being Battlefield 5 in 2018. Taking place in the not-so-distant future of 2027 as the NATO alliance fractures and private military force Pax Armata rises, the latest entry adds new multiplayer options, a single player campaign, the return of creator focused Portal tools and a set of sandbox enhancements.
Multiplayer launches with a large map roster that ranges from Tajikistan’s Liberation Peak to an under-bridge clash in Manhattan and construction zones outside Cairo in New Sobek City, among others. Classic Conquest, Breakthrough and Rush return alongside Escalation, a new mode built around fast shifting objectives. Shooter staples such as Team Deathmatch, Squad Deathmatch, Domination and King of the Hill also feature with Battlefield’s trademark destruction and vehicular play.
The single player campaign spans nine missions as players join Dagger 13, a US Marine raider squad taking the fight to Pax Armata in set pieces from Brooklyn to Cairo. Portal arrives at launch in an expanded form, letting players remix rules, loadouts and scenarios to create custom experiences or push the series’ systems in new directions.
Post-launch support begins with Season 1 on 28 October. Rogue Ops opens the season with the Blackwell Fields map and a new 4v4 mode, followed by California Resistance on 18 November with the Eastwood map, and Winter Offensive on 9 December featuring a seasonal update to Empire State. The publisher reinforces that all gameplay-impacting features will be free or earnable – of course, the proof is more important than the claim.
Battlefield 6 is available in a Standard Edition at $109.95 and a Phantom Edition at $149.95 AUD. The Phantom Edition includes the full game, the Phantom Squad soldier skins, two weapon packages, a vehicle skin, a combat knife skin and a token for Battlefield Pro, which grants the Season 1 Battle Pass, 25 tier skips, cosmetics, XP tokens and more.
