Two decades after the original Lumines captivated players on the PlayStation Portable, Enhance has announced a new chapter in the rhythm-puzzle franchise. Titled Lumines Arise, the game is in development for PlayStation 5 and will include optional compatibility with PlayStation VR2, with a planned release later in 2025.
Blending puzzle gameplay with audiovisual immersion, Lumines Arise invites players on a synesthetic journey through over 30 stages, each designed to evoke a range of emotional responses. From natural landscapes such as lush jungles and oceanic realms to abstract environments like Tokyo’s neon-lit streets and the vastness of outer space, every level is crafted to deliver a unique sensory experience.
On the official PlayStation Blog, Director of Enhance Takashi Ishihara described the design philosophy behind the game, emphasising its emotional resonance:
Life is rhythmic. It has a pulse. We, as living beings, experience highs and lows. Sometimes together, other times alone. Games have the power to tap directly into that rhythm, stimulating all your senses to put you into a flow state. Everything around you disappears, and you fall into the game’s world. When this happens, it’s a magical feeling that can stir powerful emotions within you.
Gameplay in Lumines Arise remains true to its roots with players rotating and dropping 2×2 coloured blocks to form squares of matching hues. These are then cleared by a Timeline that moves in sync with the background music. This mechanic creates a subtle pressure that encourages players to plan ahead and chase high-score combos.
A new gameplay feature, “Burst”, has been introduced in this instalment. Players can now charge a gauge and activate Burst to lock a square in place, expanding it before time expires. This addition opens the door for high-scoring, screen-clearing combos and adds another layer of strategy to the game.
Musically, Lumines Arise is being scored by Hydelic, the studio behind the award-winning soundtrack of Tetris Effect: Connected. The music is tightly integrated with gameplay, with every action feeding back into the audio environment. The game’s first single, Only Human, is currently available on Bandcamp, with releases on other platforms expected soon.
A demo for Lumines Arise is planned for release later in the year, with Enhance suggesting it may include multiplayer features.
