Wizards of the Coast has announced the upcoming release of Magic: The Gathering—Final Fantasy, a special crossover set that celebrates the varied worlds of Final Fantasy through the lens of the Magic: The Gathering card game. Scheduled for release on 13 June 2025, the set will feature characters and moments from every mainline Final Fantasy game, depicted with unique Magic: The Gathering artwork. Preorders are now available through local game stores, online retailers like Amazon, and other outlets where Magic products are sold.
The Magic: The Gathering—Final Fantasy aims to showcase the largest collection of Final Fantasy artwork ever assembled in a single game. Magic artists have reimagined legendary moments from the Final Fantasy franchise, while classic artwork from the series is also featured. Over 100 legendary creature cards are set to capture fan-favourite characters and iconic moments.
The set introduces several new mechanics inspired by the Final Fantasy universe:
- Saga Creatures: This marks the debut of Saga creatures in Magic: The Gathering, allowing players to summon powerful creatures inspired by Final Fantasy summons to aid them in battle.
- Double-Faced Cards: Returning in this set, double-faced cards can be transformed by fulfilling specific conditions, showcasing alternate forms of characters, minigames, and story moments from the Final Fantasy series.
In addition to these gameplay mechanics, the set features a range of special card designs:
- Borderless Character Cards – Featuring 55 legendary Final Fantasy characters with vibrant backgrounds.
- Borderless Woodblock Cards – Inspired by traditional Japanese woodblock paintings, these cards depict intricate artwork of the series’ iconic summons.
- Borderless Final Fantasy Artist Cards – Highlighting the work of fan-favourite artists who have contributed to the series over the years.
The set also includes a special Final Fantasy Through the Ages Bonus Sheet, showcasing iconic Magic cards reimagined with Final Fantasy artwork, including contributions from renowned artists such as Yoshitaka Amano and Tetsuya Nomura.
Four Commander decks are being released as part of this set, each telling the story of a different Final Fantasy game, allowing players to relive the experiences of Final Fantasy VI, Final Fantasy VII, Final Fantasy X, and Final Fantasy XIV in a new format.
Additionally, three Secret Lair drops will accompany the set’s release, capturing the worlds of Final Fantasy with Secret Lair’s signature artistic style. More details about these special drops will be revealed closer to the launch date.
