Sony Interactive Entertainment has today officially launched the PlayStation 5 Pro console, boasting some potentially significant technological updates albeit sans a Disc Drive. While gamers are still able to enjoy the full suite of games on the original PlayStation 5 console, the PlayStation 5 Pro boasts:
- An upgraded GPU with 67% more Compute Units and 28% faster memory than the current PS5, allowing for up to 45% faster game rendering.
- Enhanced ray tracing capabilities that double the speed of light reflection and refraction over the existing PS5 model.
- AI-driven upscaling via PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution technology, offering detailed and clear visuals.
- A 2TB SSD drive
The console also supports a number of optimised game titles, including Alan Wake 2, Dragon’s Dogma 2, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Hogwarts Legacy, and Horizon Forbidden West. The PlayStation 5 Pro is priced at an RRP of $1,199.95 AUD, with the disc drive accessory sold separately… if you can find it – which is almost impossible here in Australia as of writing.
Outside of the PS5 Pro launching, SIE has also launched the Chroma Collection, a range of accessories that includes DualSense wireless controllers and console covers designed with a dynamic, colour-shifting effect. The collection debuts with Chroma Pearl and Chroma Indigo options, with a third colour, Chroma Teal, scheduled for release on 23 January 2025. Chroma Collection DualSense wireless controllers are available at an RRP of $124.95 AUD, while the console covers are priced at an RRP of $99.95 AUD.
