Although the redesign from first impressions is what I would argue as minimal at best, Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced that a new version of the PlayStation 5 console will be rolling out to store shelves during the holiday season, with its main selling point being that it is approximately 30% smaller in size and 18-24% lighter in compared to the two launch model units.
The smaller PS5 models are set to see no performance differences between the launch models, with each the digital and disc drive versions boasting 1TB storage. However, the new model does provide the option to add an ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive to the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition, should you regret your decision to go all-digital down the line. The standalone disc drive will be purchasable for $159.95 AUD.
According to Sony Interactive Entertainment:
To address the evolving needs of players, our engineering and design teams collaborated on a new form factor that provides greater choice and flexibility. The same technology features that make PS5 the best to play are packed into a smaller form factor, along with an attachable Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive and a 1TB SSD for more internal storage.
The new PS5 model will be available starting this November in the United States at select local retailers. It will continue to roll out globally in the following months. Once inventory of the current PS5 model has sold out, the new PS5 will become the only model available. Pricing in Australia is as follows:
PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive – $799.95 AUD
PS5 Digital Edition – $679.95 AUD
Standalone Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive – $159.95 AUD (Bringing the Digital + Disc cost to $839.90 AUD)
New Vertical Stand – $49.95 AUD
