With the Invictus Launch Week commencing this weekend in Star Citizen, it should come as little surprise that Cloud Imperium Games have kicked things off by announcing a new craft for the community to pledge for. Although the week is primarily an opportunity to showcase space-faring crafts, the latest offering instead focuses on an overland transport rover from the luxury in-world manufacturer Origin Jumpworks. Perhaps even more surprising, it is not something that will require hundreds of dollars to pledge towards.
Origin Jumpworks is the manufacturer of high-quality luxury crafts tailored more towards those looking the explore the galaxy in style (600i), undertake mid-range military maneuvers in comfort (300i) or fly around VIPs in the Star Citizen equivalent of a cruise ship (890 Jump). Today the Origin G12 has been unveiled – a fleet of three overland transport vehicles which are described as “fusing rugged capability with the style and attention to detail you expect from Origin” and as “[t]he ultimate hybrid of performance and passion”.

The base variant of the vehicle is the G12 Touring, which might pair well for those looking to take VIP passengers across the planet surface. It offers a remote turret and a generous 2 SCU of cargo capacity. The cargo capacity is where the G12 shines, as it is the lone rover which offers it.

For those who want to flaunt style while in more dangerous territory, the G12A Combat model might be well-suited. The rover offers a small suite of missles and countermeasures for those life-or-death situations, in addition to heavier armour and better manoeuvrability.

Finally, given their involvement in racing ships, it is little surprise that the G12R Racing model is also on offer. Seeking to give ground racers an edge, this variant offers a “lightweight wheel system” which is durable and grips to the road, offering the highest maximum speed. While it has very little armour and no on-board weaponry, it has an EMP device.
We do not know the standard prices for each of these ships yet. But for those who are not upgrading, melting ships for or using store credit to pledge towards these rovers; purchases are open for Warbond Versions of these ships. Warbond variants offer no difference from the main versions. Still, they are often priced a little cheaper due to the full price paid being pledged towards the development of the game (rather than reallocating existing funds). In development by Cloud Imperium Games and their studios across North America and Europe, Star Citizen is being helmed by Wing Commander (1990s) creator Chris Roberts. The game has currently been in a long-term alpha phase with no confirmed release date. Despite this, the studio has raised more than $265 million USD through on-going crowdfunding. Please keep in mind should you decide to purchase towards Star Citizen, that this is an incomplete project and that you are pledging towards an extended crowdfunding campaign with no 100% guarantee of a finished product.
