Final Fantasy VII Remake selling well comes as no surprise. As one of the most anticipated game releases of the year kudos of its nostalgic value and reputation as one of the greatest RPGs of all time, it selling poorly would be a bigger surprise. The question is… just how many copies were shipped out to meet demand?
Publisher and developer Square Enix has confirmed that in the three days following its official launch on 10 April 2020, shipments and digital sales totalled 3.5 million copies exclusively on the PlayStation 4. With approximately 106 million PS4 units out on the market (As of 30 December 2019), this is one copy for every 30 units. As many days have passed since those sales numbers were compiled, I would expect it has increased considerably.

Rebuilt for the current generation of gaming consoles, Final Fantasy VII Remake is a reimagining of the 1997 PlayStation 1 RPG classic, released as a timed exclusive on the PlayStation 4. A multi-year project spanning multiple incremental instalments, the first game released this month is set in the eclectic and sprawling city of Midgar and presents a fully standalone gaming experience that goes deeper into the world and characters than before.
