SingStar Online Servers to Go Offline from 31 January 2020 1

Along with the original EyeToy Play, Sony Computer Entertainment’s first SingStar title served as my introduction to not only the PlayStation 2, but the PlayStation brand in general. I still have several fond memories coming home after school and belting out some of the hit songs of the time – from a pitch perfect rendition of Blondie’s Heart of Glass and an ad libbed version of P!nk’s Get this Party Started, to progressively closer to a perfect score in Jamelia’s Superstar – for its time it was an enjoyable game both by oneself, with ones family or for a game night with friends.

Over the PlayStation 2 and PlayStation 3 era of games, more than two dozen instalments in the series were released. Some of the titles were based on artists (Queen / Abba), some were based on musical eras/styles (80s, 90s, Pop) and some were just compilations of popular songs. As the years went on the number of titles released were lowered, although a few stray titles such SingStar Celebration in 2017 were released, and supported by a free online app for the PlayStation 4 to this day with in-app store purchases.

However… all good things eventually come to an end…. and the end to at least a part of the SingStar server has been declared 31 January 2020. Sony Computer Entertainment have today announced that their SingStore online servers will be shut down on this date, rendering all online functionality, network features and digital musical download services disabled. To be specific, these are the services that SCE have confirmed to be unavailable:

• Purchasing or downloading new songs will not be possible or available

• You will not be able to view, upload or interact with any online user generated content (UGC)

• You will not be able to share recorded media at the end of a performance on any of the available public sharing platforms (e.g. Facebook, Twitter, PSN or SingStar community)

• You will not be able to track and record high scores online

• You will not be able to complete online challenges

• You will not be able to unlock the following trophies:
 o Channel surfer
 o Concert debut
 o Stars in my eyes

For any trophy hunters in particular waiting to complete the SingStar trophy line-up, I would recommend getting onto the three soon-to-be-inaccessible trophies soon.

However this does not spell the complete end of SingStar for those who have invested time and/or money into the service. It has been confirmed that the following functionality will still be available going forward:

• Play songs on physical discs

• Play digital songs that have previously been purchased and downloaded to the hard-drive

• PS4 users only will also be able to re-download previously downloaded and deleted songs. Note this is not possible for PS3 / PS2 users, where if a downloaded song is deleted, it cannot be re-downloaded

• Play Party Mode

• Track and record high scores offline

• Take and store videos and snapshots onto your PlayStation hard drive

• Create song playlists
