A few years after announcing their virtual reality peripheral (Initially known as Project Morpheus), Sony Interactive Entertainment have released their first batch of PlayStation VR units onto the market. Seeking to “take gaming to the next level of immersion” and transport “players into the virtual worlds of their games”, the PlayStation VR is beginning to be made available in many regions – with a recommended retail price of $549.95 AUD over here in Australia.

While the experience of gamers might have differed depending on where you reside in the world, here in Australia the PlayStation 4 at launch experienced stock shortages – which mean’t that even pre-ordering the console mean’t potentially weeks if not months of waiting if you didn’t get in early. The same seems to be true for the PlayStation VR, with EB Games for example currently taking orders for their “3rd Shipment” due to arrive sometime in December 2016.

Those who have been able to nab themselves a PlayStation VR unit have a decent choice of launch titles to purchase. These range from new games including PlayStation VR Worlds and RIGS Mechanized Combat League, to a few affordable yet smaller games like Until Dawn: Rush of Blood, and even some VR staples like EVE: Valkyrie. Sony Interactive Entertainment are estimating that approximately 50 VR supported games will be available for purchase/download by the end of this year.

For those looking to buy themselves a PlayStation VR unit, do keep in mind that you require both a PlayStation 4 console and a PlayStation 4 Camera which is sold separately.

Michael Ephraim | Managing Director of Sony Interactive Entertainment Australia

With today’s introduction of PlayStation VR, we are embarking on the biggest step change in gaming and entertainment innovation that the industry has seen. PlayStation fans have always had a tremendous appetite for immersive, accessible and social entertainment and our ambition is to deliver on fulfilling their needs. With PlayStation VR, players can now live these experiences with their family and friends in lounge rooms across Australia. The future of play has most certainly arrived.

Not the first virtual reality platform on the market, how will the PlayStation VR fare in this still developing space of gaming? Time will tell.

I am currently in the process of testing my PlayStation VR unit and several of its games. Expect to read my thoughts on the platform starting this weekend.
