Nintendo to Release New Console “NX” in March 2017

-

Miitomo-1Nintendo recently released their earning announcement for its full fiscal year ending March 31st. This included many updates and other pieces of interesting information about their future projects, and the status of their entry into the mobile market.

Nintendo previously noted their intention to release more information about their next system (Codenamed “NX”) this year. While this first batch of information does not showcase any console exclusive games or specific features… they have confirmed a March 2017 release for the platform. There is no information on when further information will be unveiled, but we do know that it will not be making an appearance at E3.

The next news is about the newest instalment of The Legend of Zelda, which has been in the works for a number of years now. Unfortunately, the game has been postponed until 2017. However in more positive news, it will be available on both the Wii U and NX. Both versions of the game have been in development simultaneously, and they claim this delay will grant them more time to polish the game.

The Legend of Zelda will be a major focus of Nintendo’s presence at E3 2016. A demo of the title will be playable on the Wii U at E3 2016. But surprisingly it will be the only playable game Nintendo presents at the show. According to them, this decision is “in order to provide attendees a complete immersion”.

Moving towards Nintendo’s smartphone/tablet offerings, the company have reported good success with their Miitomo social app. They have currently crossed 10 million unique users worldwide, leading to 300 million conversations and the creation of 20 million Miifotos. To celebrate Miitomo reaching 10 million users, Nintendo will run a special 10-day “Celebrating 10 Million Users!” promotion between April 29 and May 8.

So what’s next from Nintendo in the mobile space? Their next mobile apps will be based on the Fire Emblem and Animal Crossing franchises, with both apps to be available this Spring. As for the former app, while making it more accessible in comparison to the Fire Emblem games on other platforms, Nintendo aims to offer “the great value of a role-playing strategy game”. Nintendo will design the latter game so that it will be connected with the world of Animal Crossing for dedicated gaming systems. Expect to hear more on these titles closer to launch.

Tatsumi Kimishima | President of Nintendo

As we report the results of the last fiscal year, we also look forward to an exciting period ahead with further growth in our mobile business, new products for our dedicated video game systems and continued progress in our efforts to increase the number of consumers experiencing our IP through games, licensing and expanded entertainment.
