The Forms of Warfare in Romance of the Three Kingdoms XIII

Koei Tecmo’s long-running Romance of the Three Kingdoms franchise is soon to receive its thirteenth numbered instalment since launching in 1985. But with a new console generation, the game seems to have received some new additions and alterations to its strategy-oriented battle system.

Romance of the Three Kingdoms XIII will see players navigating their way through a variety of warfare types, including open-field, narrow pass, naval, duels and debates. Using each of these systems effectively will be key to winning a battle. An important part of the strategy process is Debates. These conversations present the ability to convince lords to act in certain ways, as well as to raise support to ultimately benefit your cause. Duels on the other hand, forgoes words for weapons, and are executed in a turn-based system. Carrying out a duel will present bonuses for players within the battle, useful to getting the upper-hand on their opponent. There are also siege battles which can be initiated during an ongoing battle. Through creating a blockade around the enemy stronghold, players will be able to cover more ground and seize their target more effectively.

This latest instalment will also see Naval battles enhanced, allowing the navy to create strategic blockades or carry out skirmishes on the seas. But for those who seek to roam the lands, controlling narrow passes can be a good means of taking down foes or defending your territory. As one might expect, there are also open field battles, which are large scale fights where the player can dynamically control the course of battle. By organising your units and placing them in the best vantage points, the battles can be won by both force and strategy in tandem.

Learning how to use these different battle types in combination with making key decisions and taking advantage of the individual abilities possessed by each officer are key to success

Developed and published by Koei Tecmo, Romance of the Three Kingdoms XIII will be available on the PlayStation 4 (Physical and Digital) and PC (Steam – Digital) starting July 8th 2016.
