Star Citizen Alpha 2.1 PTU Now Available to All Backers

For the last week or so, a limited number of Star Citizen backers have been able to try out the game’s Update 2.1 version on the PTU test servers. Although not as significant an upgrade as 2.0, this version provides a number of new improvements, fixes and additions. Most notable of these additions is the Sabre being made hangar ready and the base Freelancer ship becoming flyable. As a big fan of the Freelancer series myself, this is incredibly exciting!

As of today and just in time for the holiday season, Cloud Imperium Games have opened up the PTU test servers to all players. This means that if you want to play a more stable version of the game, you can continue to play the 2.0 version. But if you want to try out some new features or fly your Freelancer, you can opt to download the 2.1 version separately. Do note that the PTU’s capacity is “somewhat restricted” compared to the live version, so you may find yourself unable to access a server at some points in time. As those who have already tried out this PTU will already know, this server is about testing new content before its released to the live server, and bugs are much more likely to appear.

Only the base MISC Freelancer model is currently flyable from Port Olisar, with the DUR, MAX and MIS variants remaining non-flyable at this point in time. In addition, the appearance of these variants will not change in the Hangar module. However, those who own any of the variants will be given a base Freelancer as a rental in universe mode.

Plan to sign up for Star Citizen and take your first steps in the Verse? Enlist using the referral code STAR-JCS6-3943 and you will earn yourself an extra 5,000 UEC to spend in the Voyager Direct store. As you might already expect with a referral system, I receive a few perks as well. Game Packages start at $45.00 (Aurora LN, Aurora MR, Mustang Alpha) and include digital download copies of both Star Citizen and Squadron 42 when they are launched in the future. Depending on your budget and ship preference, packages can go right up to $325.00 plus.
