Quantic Dream’s Next Game, Detroit, Serves as a Successor to Their 2012 ‘Kara’ Tech Demo

-

Back in 2012, the team at Quantic Dream released a tech demo titled ‘Kara’ for the PlayStation 3. Despite it being a surprising emotional and complex video, there was at the time no announced plans for the characters or concepts presented to be incorporated into a new game. With their launch of Beyond: Two Souls in the latter half of 2013, time moved on and I completely forgot about the tech demo which impressed me so much.

With Paris Games Week currently taking place this week, Sony Computer Entertainment Australia and Quantic Dream took to the stage and announced their newest project – Detroit. Although information on this title is currently limited, Quantic Dream Director David Cage stated on the official PlayStation Blog that they have “imagined our world in a near future where androids like Kara would look, speak and move like human beings“, and “wondered how we — humans — would react if we were confronted with a new form of intelligence, how androids conceived as machines would be perceived if they started to have emotions“. Cage has further commented that they don’t “want to do another story on AI“, but rather want to focus on “what it means to be human and what it would be like to be in the shoes of an android discovering our world and their own emotions…“.

Quantic Dream have managed to present enticing stories through both Harvest Rain and Beyond: Two Souls, so I look forward to seeing how they work with this new concept. This is going to be a PlayStation 4 exclusive title as well, so lets hope they put the console generation jump to good use.
