Sony Computer Entertainment announced during the SCEJA Press Conference 2015 in Tokyo that they have decided to rename what as previously been known as ‘Project Morpheus’ to PlayStation VR.
Although little new information has been made available about Sony’s virtual reality headset, it is currently known that the device will combine the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Camera to enable players to enjoy some degree of virtual reality immersion in select gaming titles. Through support with either the PlayStation Move Motion Controller and/or a DUALSHOCK 4 Wireless controller, it will allow players to explore virtual environments and interact with virtual characters to a higher degree. Of course, with virtual reality still a growing market, time will tell just how immersive the experience can be with PlayStation VR and other similar devices.
In a statement on the official PlayStation Blog, Masayasu Ito (EVP Division President of PS Product Business and VP, Software Design Division) commented on the name:
“The name ‘PlayStation VR’ not only directly expresses an entirely new experience from PlayStation that allows players to feel as if they are physically inside the virtual world of a game, but it also reflects our hopes that we want our users to feel a sense of familiarity as they enjoy this amazing experience.“
