Perhaps one of the more significant limitations of the Xbox One (shared with the PlayStation 4) was that it did not feature any backwards compatibility. This meant that those looking to replace their Xbox 360 unit with an Xbox One were required to still possess both consoles, given it was not possible to play Xbox 360 video games on the newer console.
Although the functionality was not expected to be introduced at all in the future, Microsoft surprised myself and no doubt others by announcing that backwards compatibility will be coming to the Xbox One for free in the near future. For release sometime this coming holiday season, select Xbox 360 games will be playable on the Xbox One, with each title to retrospectively support current-gen functionality including screenshots, broadcasting and GameDVR.
More than 100 classic Xbox 360 games will be available at launch, with more to be added at a later date. Fans are encouraged to suggest the titles they would like to see via Xbox Feedback.
