Tecmo Koei Announce Plans to Bring Ar Nosurge: Ode to an Unborn Star to Western Markets

When the distribution of GUST video games to western markets shifted from Nippon Ichi Software America (Who had handled both Atelier and Ar Tonelico series since the early years of the PS2 era) to Tecmo Koei, I think there was some legitimate scepticism about how long-running franchises would last in the hands of a new publisher. While Atelier Ayesha was first announced and promoted in a shockingly short period of time, they have since treated other Atelier games games pretty well in terms of localization, and are now moving on to their very first non-Atelier title.

Tecmo Koei have this evening announced that they have/are localizing and will be bringing Ar Nosurge: Ode to an Unborn Star to international markets from September 26th, 2014 exclusively for the PlayStation 3. The game has been described as a Fantasy, Sci-Fi, ‘7 Dimension’ RPG that takes place in a world where music and song can create magic. It tells the story of a civilisation that lost their planet and has been roaming the edge of space for 2000 years in search of a new home.

The player follows two sets of characters: Delta and Casty, whose goal is to protect humanity and save the world, and Ion & Earthes, who are trying to find Ion a way home to Earth. The player can interchange between both pairs and soon discover a way to combine their storylines and strengths to eventually solve the mystery that shrouds their ongoing struggle.

Much like most titles developed by Gust, this is an intricately deep turn-based RPG and it includes a detailed synthesis system for players to create their own items. Additionally, Ar Nosurge: Ode to an Unborn Star has a  character development system that focuses more on the bonds/ relationships between the main characters than their success in missions and battles, as the player’s party grows stronger if the characters have a closer relationship. Additionally, when in battle, character pairs fight together. One is always the first line of defence, attacking enemies in melee with knives and swords while protecting the other, who is weaving a song to fend off enemies. The longer the song lasts the more damage it creates- not only to enemies visible on screen, but to ones that are in line to attack.

While it would be too late in the evening for a confirmation from Mindscape about their plans to distribute Ar Nosurge: Ode to an Unborn Star in Australia and New Zealand, I think it is a safe estimate that they will be. Unless the Australian Classification Board finally decides that the content in this game is worse than Atelier Rorona Plus’ “References to Sexual Violence” and gets refused classification.

*More screenshots for Ar Nosurge: Ode to an Unborn Star will be released on The Otaku’s Study momentarily as a separate post.

** Currently the announcement has been made for only Europe. But the likelihood that Europe but not North America is receiving the game is quite low.
