One of the major new features in Pokemon X and Y was the inclusion of Mega Evolution, a form of temporary evolution afforded to select Pokémon which gave them a competitive edge in battle. The Pokémon Company International have today confirmed that this feature will carry over to the Pokémon Trading Card game with the release of the XY expansion on the 5th February 2014, which is when 10-card booster packs are set to begin hitting store shelves.
With the debut of Mega Evolution, Pokémon TCG: XY will change the way Pokémon TCG players build decks and create strategies for battle. Mega Evolutions will come to Pokémon-EX cards like Venusaur-EX and Blastoise-EX, however players will need to consider their battle scenarios carefully as playing a Mega Evolution Pokémon ends a player’s turn immediately. This means they will be unable to attack and can remain vulnerable to an extra round of attacks that they otherwise could have used. This is a risk versus reward scenario however, as Mega Evolution Pokémon have incredibly hard-hitting attacks and high HP totals, making them even stronger than Pokémon-EX in TCG matches.
In addition to this announcement, they have also confirmed that the Pokémon TCG: XY – Kalos Starter Set will begin distribution on the 8th November 2013. This will be the first set to feature Fairy-type Pokémon, and will come with a resistance to Darkness-type Pokémon. Each XY—Kalos Starter Set deck and XY booster pack will include a code card that unlocks virtual cards via the TCG’s online service.
