When asked what my favourite PS2 Nippon Ichi game was, without thinking about it I instantaneously refer fondly to Makai Kingdom. Most probably the one game harder to find over here then Disgaea 1, it follows the most “Badass Freaking Overlord” Zetta, who is reduced to book form and seeks to take back his body, and rightful place in the world (At the top). The game generally follows a similar system to Phantom Brave with Zetta taking a ‘Marona’ role, without the turn limits or needing to confine party members to rocks or trees. Mixed with some clever writing, classic NIS design and Crispin Freeman taking the role of Zetta, it was the SRPG of all SRPG’s.
However, with PSP remake after PSP remake going by, I did feel disheartened when Disgaea 1-2, Phantom Brave and La Pucelle Tactics (Only in Japan) received them but this game did not. Until now! On September 22nd, the game shall be released in Japan. Whilst there is no official word on if there will be an English release, a interview on gaming website Siliconera shows that NIS America hasn’t ruled it out yet.
Whilst the game does have most of the same features and characters thankfully, there is one addition that is sure to bring people back… that is the obligatory bonus storyline. This time, it involves a brand new character to the Makai Kingdom universe – Zetta’s Daughter Peta. Whilst nothing much has come out about the storyline yet, the title is supposed to be “Papa is the Strongest Demon King”. I am interested to see what comes out of this.
