Woodward Productions and Neil Gooding Productions have announced that the one-woman play Shirley Valentine will open at Her Majesty’s Theatre in Adelaide on 1 April for a strictly limited eight-performance, six-day run. This will follow its prior season in Melbourne, which concludes tonight at the Athenaeum Theatre.
Natalie Bassingthwaighte returns to Australian stages to take on the role of Shirley Valentine, under the direction of former Queensland Theatre artistic director Lee Lewis. Written by Willy Russell, Shirley Valentine is a humorous and uplifting story of a middle-aged Liverpool housewife who, feeling trapped in her daily routine, finds herself talking to the kitchen wall and reminiscing about the adventurous spirit of her youth.
An unexpected opportunity arises when a friend invites her on a spontaneous trip to Greece. With courage and wit, Shirley embarks on a journey of self-discovery, challenging herself to embrace life beyond the familiar. As she rediscovers joy and independence, the question remains—will she return to her old life or embrace a new beginning?
