CHICAGO Opens in Sydney This Week

Date:

Musical theatre afficionados in Sydney have “All That Jazz” to look forward to, with Australian producer Crossroads Live Australia set to open the next leg of the Australian tour for Chicago at the Sydney Capitol Theatre this week. The season will start this Sunday (9 June) with previews, and will run through until 28 July 2024.

Audiences can look forward to Chicago’s many iconic songs, including but by no means limited to Cell Block Tango, Razzle Dazzle, We Both Reached For The Gun and Mr. Cellophane — performed by a cast of Australian talent including Anthony Warlow as Billy Flynn, Zoë Ventoura as Velma Kelly, Lucy Maunder as Roxie Hart, Peter Rowsthorn as Amos, and Asabi Goodman as Matron ‘Mama’ Morton.

Commenting on the upcoming season, producer John Frost shared enthusiasm about the production’s previous seasons in Perth, Brisbane and Melbourne; and what’s to come for Sydney:

Audiences have been giving standing ovations every performance to our extraordinary cast, led by Anthony Warlow, Zoë Ventoura, Lucy Maunder, Peter Rowsthorn and Asabi Goodman alongside the hottest ensemble in town, and now its Sydney’s turn. CHICAGO has everything that people love about a Broadway musical – a story of fame, fortune and all that jazz, one show-stopping number after another and the most amazing dancing you’ve ever seen. Get in fast before the season sells out to enjoy the razzle dazzle of this New York institution.

Set amidst the decadence of the 1920s, Chicago is the story of Roxie Hart, a housewife and nightclub dancer who murders her on-the-side lover after he threatens to walk out on her. Desperate to avoid conviction, she dupes the public, the media and her rival cellmate, Velma Kelly, by hiring Chicago’s slickest criminal lawyer Billy Flynn to transform her malicious crime into a barrage of sensational headlines, the likes of which might just as easily be ripped from today’s tabloids.

We reviewed the Brisbane production of Chicago earlier in the year, with our comprehensive review available on The Theatre Sphere. Keen on purchasing tickets to Chicago? Ticketing information for the Sydney season in addition to its following seasons at the Festival Theatre in Adelaide (from 4 August) and Canberra Theatre Centre (from 7 September) can be found on the musical’s official website.
