Fresh off the back of their Gold Coast season of Priscilla: Queen of the Desert which has just commenced a multi-week season at The Star Gold Coast (Review coming tomorrow), Matt Ward Entertainment will be pivoting over to something heavier in October 2022 – working with HOTA: Home of the Arts (HOTA) to present Green Day’s American Idiot. Running exclusively on HOTA’s Outdoor Stage from 20 October 2022 to 29 October 2022 inclusive, this is a rock-opera featuring all the songs from Green Day’s album American Idiot, along with several songs from their follow-up album, 21st Century Breakdown.
The musical first made its Australian debut at the Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC) in February 2017, presented by the folks at shake & stir theatre co, before running its inaugural Australian tour in 2018. This production by Matt Ward Entertainment is currently pitched as being exclusive to the Gold Coast, featuring direction and choreography by Kelley Abbey.
American Idiot is the story of three boyhood friends, each searching for meaning in a post 9/11 world, discover love, loss, drugs, sex, and rock and roll along the way.
Johnny, Tunny and Will struggle to find meaning in a post-9/11 world. When the three disgruntled men flee the constraints of their hometown for the thrills of city life, their paths are quickly estranged when Tunny enters the armed forces, Will is called back home to attend familial responsibilities, and Johnny’s attention becomes divided by a seductive love interest and a hazardous new friendship.
Being set on HOTA’s Outdoor Stage, the seating allocations are a bit different from your normal affair, with all but selected allocated seating passes requiring folks to sit on the lawn, bringing their own picnic rug or basic camping chair.
