Major Musicals and Shows Schedule for Sydney – January 2021 Ed.

Stage magic dwindled during 2020, and even in 2021, surprise cases of COVID-19 have drawn a big cloud over whether many theatrical productions will be able to complete or even begin their seasons. This may be because many major producers are based out of Sydney and therefore have lower financial risk with cancellations, but both the Sydney Lyric Theatre and Capitol Theatre have been booked out well into the second half of 2021.

If anyone has any increased risk from catching COVID-19 or are just not comfortable with being in semi-close proximity to others they do not know, I would strongly recommend not heading to the theatre just yet. But if you are willing to take the chance (and agree to follow all COVID-SAFE rules), then scroll down to see a list of what is currently confirmed to be on-sale for both major Sydney venues.

Pippin
Now until Sunday 24 January 2021
No more performances to be added

PIPPIN tells the story of a young man at a crossroads in his life. Does he follow in the footsteps of his father, one of the most powerful men in the land? Or does he strike out on his own, to find his own ‘corner of the sky?’ PIPPIN is a play within a play. The story is told by a travelling troupe of actors and acrobats (called ‘Players’), directed by the mysterious Leading Player. Like a vaudeville act, the Players both act out the roles of the story and speak directly to the audience.

PIPPIN stars Ainsley Melham (Aladdin on Broadway and across Australia) as the young and confused protagonist Pippin and Gabrielle McClinton (PIPPIN Broadway and US National Tour) as the charming and manipulative Leading Player. Returning to the stage after an extraordinary award winning career in television Kerri-Anne Kennerley plays Berthe, Pippin’s saucy grandmother. Simon Burke (Sydney Theatre Company; Les Misérables) plays Pippin’s demanding father Charles, Lucy Maunder (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory; Beautiful) takes on the widow and mother role of Catherine; Leslie Bell (Broadway’s Chicago; Ragtime) will play Fastrada; and Euan Doidge (Les Misérables; Kinky Boots) is Pippin’s half-brother Lewis.
