In response to the COVID-19 shutdown, the creative team at Queensland Theatre responded by launching their Play Club – a regular online event which would see members of the performing arts industry come together and read scripts of iconic plays. It may not be an ideal replacement for on-stage performances, but it is nevertheless a suitable alternative until venues can open back up.
On 21 April 2020, this series of events were kicked off with a live reading of Vad Badham’s romantic comedy ‘The Bull, the Moon and the Coronet of Stars’, which Queensland Theatre claims “drew an audience from across Australia and even the UK”. A few weeks on and it has been confirmed that the second play club will commence on Tuesday 12 May 2020 at 8.00pm, featuring a reading of Mr Bailey’s Minder by Debra Oswald. Oswald as a multi-award winning Australian author, being one of the creatives behind the televisions series Offspring.
The capacity for each of the upcoming free streams will be strictly limited. Therefore, if this is something of interest to you, booking via the official Queensland Theatre website is essential. While the full line-up of Play Club streams has yet to be announced, keep an eye out for more information in the coming weeks!
