Following a tour which has taken the company around Australia and New Zealand, The Book of Mormon is headed back to Brisbane one more time for an encore. This strictly limited season will be performed in the Queensland Performing Arts Centre’s (QPAC) Lyric Theatre starting 3 January 2020, and will serve as the summer musical for the venue. This follows the show’s inaugural Brisbane season earlier this year, which kicked off on 16 March and ran until early-June to sold-out audiences.
Having amassed more than 1,000 performances since it kicked off in January 2017 at the Princess Theatre, Melbourne – The Book of Mormon features a book, music and lyrics by Trey Parker (South Park), Robert Lopez (Avenue Q) and Matt Stone (South Park). Given the comedy stylings of these three, you should definitely go into this season expecting more of a NSFW experience than you might otherwise expect from a musical.
The Book of Mormon follows the story of two young Mormons, the aspirational Elder Kevin Price and space-cadet Elder Arnold Cunningham – who having completed their training begin their role as missionaries for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (Known to some as Mormons). Having been sent on a mission to a decrepit village in Uganda dealing with oppression from a fearsome warlord, an outbreak of HIV/AIDS and famine among other issues – this is not a mission that either will find easy…..
The Book of Mormon’s Australian cast includes Blake Bowden and Nyk Bielak in the lead roles of Elder Price and Elder Cunningham respectively. They are joined on-stage by Tigist Strode (Nabulungi), Tyson Jennette (Mafala) and Joel Grander (Elder McKinley) among a diverse cast of other characters.
The Book of Mormon is produced in Australia by Anne Garefino, Scott Rudin, Important Musicals and John Frost.
