Were I to mention one theatrical performance I have seen this year that i’d love to see just one more time, it would have to be Heathers the Musical. Following its 2015 Australian Premiere at Hayes Theatre Company in Sydney, the show began its #WesterbergFieldTrip by performing at the Queensland Performing Arts Centre’s Playhouse in January. This is where the stage musical earned itself a ★★★★½ in my review of it. While Heathers the Musical may have lost a few cast members since then to productions like We Will Rock You, the field trip is not over so soon.
Director Trevor Ashley is bringing this creative adaptation of the 1988 black-comedy film to the Arts Centre Melbourne starting May 11th 2016. This means there is less than one week before audiences will stream into Melbourne’s Playhouse and enjoy what I still consider to be a memorable experience. Tickets to see Heathers the Musical are now on sale, and can be purchased via the Melbourne Arts Centre’s website or box office. Unlike the QPAC season, four matinee sessions of this show will be offered, perfect for those who aren’t night owls or want to leave their kids with family members (Note: Heathers the Musical is not a family show, and does feature sexual content). Tickets to the preview session on May 11th are priced at $60, while all other sessions are priced between $74.00 and $104.00.
Based on the 1988 film Heathers which starred Winona Ryder and Christian Slater, this is a stage adaptation written by Kevin Murphy (Reefer Madness, Desperate Housewives) and Laurence O’Keefe (Bat Boy, Legally Blonde). The Melbourne production features Hilary Cole as Veronica Sawyer, Stephen Madsen as J.D., Hannah Frederickson as Heather Duke, Rebecca Hetherington as Heather McNamara and Lucy Maunder who reprises her role as Heather Chandler.
Heathers the Musical takes place in Westerberg High, which is ruled by a shoulder-padded, scrunchie-wearing threesome: Heather, Heather and Heather, the hottest and cruellest girls at school. But misfit Veronica Sawyer rejects their regime and falls in love with the dangerously sexy new kid J.D.. When Heather Chandler kicks her out of the group, Veronica decides to put the Heathers in their place – six feet under
