Yoshiaki Kawajiri’s 1993 anime film Ninja Scroll will return to cinemas across Australia and New Zealand from 8 October 2026, with Sugoi Co bringing its digitally restored 4K presentation to local screens for the first time. The limited season will feature Japanese audio with English subtitles at all screenings. Tickets go on sale from tomorrow at participating cinemas.
Produced by US rights holder Sentai under Kawajiri’s supervision, the restoration draws from the film’s original 35mm camera negative. The process included a full 4K scan at 3840 × 2160 resolution, damage repair and colour correction to create a new digital master. The restored version had its world premiere at the 2026 Berlin Film Festival.
Set during Japan’s Edo period, Ninja Scroll follows Jubei, whose rescue of a young ninja woman draws him into a larger conflict. Together, they investigate the mysterious deaths of an entire village and uncover a demonic conspiracy, making themselves targets of the forces behind it.
