Funimation Entertainment Ceases Simulcast of Anime ‘Interspecies Reviewers’

While not something completely unheard of in the North American anime industry, it is not every season, let alone every year, that a publisher discontinues their simulcasting of an anime mid-season. The only example coming to mind is Sentai Filmworks’ discontinuation of Ro-Kyu-Bu! in 2011. Funimation Entertainment is the latest company to do such a thing, with them dropping Interspecies Reviewers altogether after streaming three episodes. This means that none of the episodes past or future can be watched on the FunimationNow streaming service. Nor is there currently any US-based video-on-demand service offering episodes officially. The biggest surprise is that this announcement follows them offering simuldubbed episodes with English audio, the first having gone live last week.

Given the racier of Interspecies Reviewers compared to other Funimation licenses, it was arguably a surprise acquisition from them. Adapted from the original manga by Amahara and masha, this series follows the pursuits of a group of adventurers who spent their nights in red-light districts trying out “establishments” featuring staff consisting of various monster girls. Below is an official synopsis of the show, which indicates the adult-themes within:

Beauty truly is in the eye of the beholder! From elves to succubi to cyclopes and more, the Yoruno Gloss reviewers are here to rate the red-light delights of all manner of monster girls…The only thing is, they can never agree on which species are the hottest!

While Funimation Entertainment has been quiet on their removal of Interspecies Reviewers, an unnamed representative did provide the below statement to the team at AnimeNewsNetwork:

After careful consideration, we determined that this series falls outside of our standards. We have the utmost respect for our creators so rather than substantially alter the content, we felt taking it down was the most respectful choice.

Of course, the main question which should come out of this is that how did Funimation Entertainment get to three episodes before realising that they would need to cancel their work on Interspecies Reviewers? The first three volumes are readily available in English from Yen Press, and were just as racy. Furthermore, the first few episodes (while heavily censored graphically) left little to the imagination when it came to what sexual acts the characters were doing on-screen. Therefore, while the decision to discontinue localisation doesn’t come as a shock, it comes as a surprise it took them this long to do so. That is, of course, unless future unaired episodes pushed the boundaries even further.

The second question is whether this will impact Funimation’s approach to simuldubbing going forward. While their range of other simuldubs are going fine, the publisher would have invested more resources into Interspecies Reviewers than a standard simulcast given the need to write an English script, hire voice actors and perform ADR work. The idea behind simuldubs is that you can watch episodes in English weeks rather than years after episodes air in Japan. But them waiting longer to announce anything a little bit risque in the future is a possibility.

It is also a shame that the first English dubbed episode may become yet another case of lost media as well.
