There is no shortage of anime which are based around online game worlds with a twist, especially following the highly successful anime adaptation of Reki Kawahara’s Sword Art Online. But if you were to ask me what my favourite anime using this plot device is, I would have to say Log Horizon. Based on the original light novel works of Mamare Touno, this series takes place in the MMORPG Elder Tale, where the thousands of players logged in during the release of an expansion find themselves trapped in the world. With no “death game” or anything like that facing them, it focuses on them adapting to this new world, and the growing threats aimed at their stability.

So far two seasons covering 50 episodes in total have aired. The second season aired between 2014 and 2015, and stopped because the episodes had reached the point that the light novel was at. Rather than make up anime-exclusive arcs to the narrative, they have clearly been biding their time until more chapters were published. With more content now available it has been confirmed that the third season of Log Horizon will begin airing in October 2020.

This announcement came from NHK who serves as the show’s original network. The season will be titled Log Horizon: Entaku Hōkai or Log Horizon: Collapse of the Round Table, which is the name of the light novel’s twelfth volume. Whether this season will expand upon just this chapter or those proceeding it is unknown. The animation will once again come from Studio Deen, with the original voice cast and lead staff returning.

New to Log Horizon? You can watch the first two seasons either as part of DVD/Blu-ray collections from your local anime publisher or through many video-on-demand streaming services including AnimeLab and CrunchyRoll.
