To begin airing in Japan from early next month, the successor of Ken Akamatsu’s Mahou Sensei Negima! manga series, UQ Holder, will be receiving a TV anime adaptation. Although the Negima anime adaptations were worked on by Funimation Entertainment, it has been Sentai Filmworks who have picked up rights to the series.
UQ Holder! is a shonen action anime series, which takes place in the same universe as Negima!, albeit several decades into the future. The story begins with a young boy named Tōta Konoe being struck down while protecting his guardian, Yukihime, against a ruthless bounty hunter. Though his wounds should have been fatal, Tōta not only survives, he learns the reason behind his limited memories – Yukihime is actually a sorceress and 700-year-old vampire who saved his life two years ago by making him a vampire as well. With his powers awakened, Tōta’s life will only get more interesting when he joins a secret society for outcasts and fellow immortals: UQ Holder.
This adaptation is being directed by Yohei Suzuki (The “Hentai” Prince and the Stony Cat), with series composition by Shogo Yasukawa (Chivalry of a Failed Knight).
UQ Holder! will be available in the United States through Amazon’s Anime Strike on-demand streaming channel. Those in supported non-US territories will be able to access the series through other select digital outlets. A home video release is expected to follow.
