While the free service is here to stay indefinitely, Madman Entertainment have announced the introduction of a new AnimeLab Premium service for their official and legal video-on-demand website. While reducing the number of features accessible to non-paying users, a number of new features have been introduced for those willing to pay what seems to be a minimal fee ($6.95 per month or $69.50 per Year).
Free users will be able to access a limited back catalogue of titles, with episodes streamed at a maximum of 480p standard definition video quality and only with Japanese subtitles. Simulcasts will also be delayed by one week and free episodes will be supported by pre-roll advertisements. It is unclear if these will be similar to the ads advertising Madman titles used currently, or more traditional ads you would expect to see on any other video site.
Those looking to pay the extra money for Premium subscriptions will gain immediate access to simulcasts dubbed in Japanese and/or English, access to the full back catalogue of currently streamed titles and access to videos in 1080p high definition. This also includes ad-free viewing and currently unspecified “membership perks”.
I am personally curious if the decision to adopt a Premium Subscription model may mean Madman is / has considered introducing FUNimation Entertainment’s Broadcast Dubs to the Australian market.
Users can take advantage of a complementary 30-day trial, available via the AnimeLab website.
