If you look around the Madman Entertainment online store now, you don’t see too many licenses from the early to mid 2000’s still available on their shelf. Some of their (in my opinion) strong licenses such as Figure 17 and Read or Die have not been retained and now only available to those who choose to purchase through Ebay or similar outlets. This is the inevitability of the anime licensing world, and old titles do vanish to make way for newer ones. Excel Saga however has opposed that trend, and despite airing in Japan during 1999 – 2000, still remains available for purchase almost a decade and a half after airing. It stands as a true testament to just how the original work by Rikdo Koshi and the creative processes of Shinichi Watanabe come together well in this all-out comedy / parody anime.

It may have little overall plot and its visuals may not be able to cover the age of its creation BUT even after all these years the quirky humour, pop culture references and sometimes twisted attempts at getting a laugh still work. While many series have attempted to deliver pure-comical experiences, none have managed to reach the insanity of Excel Saga.
