With Bandai Entertainment leaving the anime publishing market in North America back in early-2012, this left Madman Entertainment as the only ones holding English-language rights for NICHIJOU – My Ordinary Life in the international market. To date no other North American publisher have picked up the rights, meaning this recent announcement by the Australian publisher might be good news for those seeking to add the series to their anime collection… or Aussies holding out for a cheaper re-release.
As part of their May 2014 release slate, Madman have released the complete 26-episode TV series of Nichijou on DVD at the price of just $59.95 AUD. As with all other Australian-exclusive anime releases this collection features only the original Japanese dub with English subtitles, but still in my mind manages to portray the quirkiness and spontinaity that the production team were evidently going for. When Everyday Life Is Not So Ordinary… Or Is It?
Life in a small city needn’t be boring. Not when your city is home to a host of deeply odd people. Granted, some residents, like high-school buddies Mio and Yuko, are fairly normal. Yuko is a world-class space-case and Mio has an unusual mastery of wrestling and boxing, but… okay, so they’re odd too. Together with fellow residents such as Nano, the frequently modified robot of five-year-old genius the Professor, talking cat Sakamoto (that’s Sakamoto-san to you!), and their own friend, the poker-faced lunatic Mai, they lead provincial lives that are perfectly mundane and thoroughly bizarre.
