Some well-known names from Japanese game development are lending their voices to the build-up for Eternal Anima. Marvelous Europe has shared a new “Special Discussion” video series for the upcoming JRPG, now available with English subtitles, in which members of the development team sit down with guests from the Japanese games industry to talk about their careers and the thinking behind the game.
Eternal Anima launches globally on 4 March 2027 on Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Windows PC via Steam.
The first instalment pairs Eternal Anima director Katsuhisa Higuchi with Mistwalker’s Hironobu Sakaguchi (who have worked together on several JRPGs over the years). They discuss the game’s core theme of ‘legacy’, their love of and views on JRPGs in general, and the thought that goes into what you find in a chest. They also discuss how they created a time-travel story without paradoxes and psychometry’s role in both skill acquisition and the Future Sight Battle system.
The second one is music. Hitoshi Sakimoto (music producer at Basiscape) joins guest composer Nobuo Uematsu to discuss musical expression, the challenges of composing for a JRPG, and their aspirations for the next generation of composers. They discuss their compositional processes and how they applied them to the Eternal Anima score.
Eternal Anima sees you travel across multiple continents, each with its own culture, in a story that spans generations. You team up with your ancestors and descendants, see how your past affects the present, and how you can be in the present. You can give your allies the abilities of those who came before you. Wade’s Psychometry is the key power here, letting you read objects’ memories and take on the abilities and classes of past heroes,, which you can then combine into your own unique playstyle.
Combat utilises the Future Sight battle system, which seeks to add a layer of tactics to the standard JRPG battle mechanics. You can see what the enemy will do and plan your response accordingly. You can use commands to delay or cancel enemy actions, giving you some control over how the battle unfolds.
