Secret Mode has released Level 421, a free new environment for the co-op horror game Escape the Backrooms, across PC and consoles. Also known as Plastic Mariana, the level arrives as part of the game’s fourth anniversary celebrations.
Plastic Mariana takes players inside an abandoned M.E.G. outpost connected to a children’s hospital. Its pitched as being dark and claustrophobic, with its corridors patrolled by Scratchers, forcing players to evade the creatures while searching for a route out of the facility. The journey also leads into a seemingly endless ball pit inhabited by a shark entity – adding an extra layer of danger to what should be staple logic in the Backrooms – ball pits should be treated as no-go zones. Along the way, players will need to solve puzzles, shoot hoops and attempt to secure passage into an area known as Overgrowth.
The update marks four years since Escape the Backrooms entered Early Access in 2022, and follows its PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S launch in May 2026. Escape the Backrooms is a co-op horror exploration game supporting between one and four players. It currently features more than 30 Backrooms levels filled with hostile entities, environmental dangers and escape challenges.
Escape the Backrooms and Level 421 are available now on PC via Steam, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2.
